They are truly inexplicable. So why was he filling out these study sheets with the exacting standards of a research scientist? There is a textbook regarding psychology that you can find, that suggests he learned about this, but that's pretty weak to be honest and seems to favor the red-herring rather than Ned's character and state of mind. He wasn't bored, he feared these people were either stumbling around near the site of his shame, or that they were intentionally searching for him or his son. Anyway, Ned explained what had happened at the end. I guess you could argue Ned got bored, and started filling in the paperwork at the station as he studied his subjects.but that means such a study was indeed going on at one time. Sure, only one cot was set, but the equipment and everything seemed fine and not something that had been sitting outside for a long time. But there are a lot of problems with that. So, I get that Ned simply found the abandoned research site, much the same way we did.
